Gold and precious metals in general are in a huge bubble, which will burst very soon. Why would anyone want to own gold is beyond me.

Because gold is the ultimate form of money. Gold will be in a bubble that is sure, however as of now it is not, as less than 1% of the general public holds any form of precious metals (bullion, stocks, ETFs, etc.). Compare this to 70% "home ownership" (read "debt ownership") in Canada and decide which of the 2 is in a bubble.
