Default buy/sell stocks without going through a broker

Hi, I'm new here. I have some idea of how to invest and I hope I will learn new secrets from this forum.

For example I have a question - Can you buy/sell stocks in Canada without going through a broker?

I think you should be able to sell shares privately as long as you have the physical share certificate. The same goes for buying stock as long as the seller has the certificate. Most investors don't get share certificates when they buy shares through their brokers. You might need to do additional paper work in the case of private sell/buy. Don't take my word for it, do your own due diligence.

Even if that's possible, which I'm not sure it is, I would still to do that through your broker. There are many discount online brokerages like RBC Direct Investing and BMO Investor Line, which you can use to buy and sell stocks online. I don't see any benefit of doing private sell/buy.

You can go through online discount brokers, where you pay a small commission on transaction.

The answer is no. You need a broker that is a member of the exchange and pays their dues. Remember the market is a Market Place just like a weekend farmers market. You go to the market to buy and vendors are there to sell. Without the market and the Brokerages that are licensed to participate in the market you would have no liquidity.
